So this is what I started out with. I got the lamp and the shade separately and I know you can't tell from the picture, but the lamp had been brush painted very sloppily and had brush streaks all over it. The shade also had rips in the outer cover and the lining inside was all stained and gross. I'm going to show you lots of pictures with this lamp because I put a ton of time into it!
The first thing I did was strip off all of the fabric from the shade - down to just the wire frame. I should have taken a picture of that! I chose a really light burlap for this shade because I had a big piece of it handy, basically, but it turned out to be the perfect choice. This picture to the right is my favorite of the group simply because of the background. Look at my messy work station. I would like to take this time to give the success of this lamp to the glass of wine in that picture and the couple that followed it. ;)
I decided to line and cover the frame with the burlap instead of using a typical shade liner. I thought it would be so cool for the light bulb to almost be seen through the shade when it was on. I bent in each of the frame bars so the drum shape would be just a tiny bit cinched then set to work. I'm not sure how many times the words, "if this shade turns out, I'll know I can do this" came out of my mouth. It was a difficult one for sure!!
My original plan was to paint the base an ivory color (minus the nasty streaks) and have it be a monochromatic piece. But I didn't have that color of paint on hand and I was being very impatient at that moment. So, I found a can of bamboo green that I already had and thought it would look really nice and natural looking with the burlap.
I LOVE the way it turned out!!! I really wish I could keep this one so whoever ends up with it is one lucky person.
This lamp is big too. It could almost be used as a mini-floor lamp. It will definitely make a huge impact in the right space!
